We recently completed a 2-day resurfacing project outside Packington Hall, working on hire to Chris Spencer Services to deliver a high-quality, durable finish using 40mm SMA.
The works involved resurfacing the main access area and surrounding sections leading up to the hall. Given the setting and the level of vehicle use, it was important the finished surface not only looked clean and professional but was also robust enough to withstand consistent traffic. A 40mm Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) specification was selected to provide excellent durability, strong load-bearing performance and a smooth, even texture.
One of the main challenges on this project was the unusual shape and layout of the area. Unlike a standard straight carriageway, the site featured sweeping curves, widening sections, pinch points and irregular edges around landscaped areas. These variations meant the paving widths were constantly changing, requiring close coordination between the paver operator and the ground team to maintain consistent depth and levels throughout.
The team carried out detailed preparation and setting out ahead of the surfacing phase to ensure smooth transitions between the varying widths. Careful management of material flow was essential to prevent segregation, particularly around the curved and tighter sections. The rolling pattern was adjusted to suit the layout, ensuring thorough compaction across the full surface without creating marks or unevenness.
Working efficiently over the two days, the crew maintained strong communication and sequencing to keep the programme on track. Attention to detail around the edges and tie-ins ensured a neat finish that complements the surroundings of Packington Hall while delivering a long-lasting, practical access surface.
